f6fdbddf 26.Sh DESCRIPTION
27.Nm
28is a utility for gathering the public ssh host keys of a number of
a4e5acef 29hosts.
30It was designed to aid in building and verifying
f6fdbddf 31.Pa ssh_known_hosts
32files.
33.Nm
34provides a minimal interface suitable for use by shell and perl
35scripts.
36.Pp
37.Nm
38uses non-blocking socket I/O to contact as many hosts as possible in
a4e5acef 39parallel, so it is very efficient.
40The keys from a domain of 1,000
f6fdbddf 41hosts can be collected in tens of seconds, even when some of those
a4e5acef 42hosts are down or do not run ssh.
43For scanning, one does not need
91789042 44login access to the machines that are being scanned, nor does the
45scanning process involve any encryption.
0f6d5acf 46.Pp
47The options are as follows:
f6fdbddf 48.Bl -tag -width Ds
90a8ae9f 49.It Fl H
50Hash all hostnames and addresses in the output.
51Hashed names may be used normally by
52.Nm ssh
53and
54.Nm sshd ,
55but they do not reveal identifying information should the file's contents
56be disclosed.
5061072f 57.It Fl p Ar port
58Port to connect to on the remote host.
75304f85 59.It Fl T Ar timeout
a4e5acef 60Set the timeout for connection attempts.
61If
f6fdbddf 62.Pa timeout
63seconds have elapsed since a connection was initiated to a host or since the
64last time anything was read from that host, then the connection is
a4e5acef 65closed and the host in question considered unavailable.
66Default is 5 seconds.
5061072f 67.It Fl t Ar type
75304f85 68Specifies the type of the key to fetch from the scanned hosts.
5061072f 69The possible values are
70.Dq rsa1
71for protocol version 1 and
72.Dq rsa
73or
74.Dq dsa
75for protocol version 2.
76Multiple values may be specified by separating them with commas.
77The default is
78.Dq rsa1 .
79.It Fl f Ar filename
3730bb22 80Read hosts or
f6fdbddf 81.Pa addrlist namelist
82pairs from this file, one per line.
83If
84.Pa -
85is supplied instead of a filename,
86.Nm
3730bb22 87will read hosts or
f6fdbddf 88.Pa addrlist namelist
89pairs from the standard input.
5061072f 90.It Fl v
91Verbose mode.
92Causes
93.Nm
94to print debugging messages about its progress.
95.It Fl 4
96Forces
97.Nm
98to use IPv4 addresses only.
99.It Fl 6
100Forces
101.Nm
102to use IPv6 addresses only.

91789042 105If a ssh_known_hosts file is constructed using
0f6d5acf 106.Nm
91789042 107without verifying the keys, users will be vulnerable to
95a07125 108.Em man in the middle
0f6d5acf 109attacks.
91789042 110On the other hand, if the security model allows such a risk,
0f6d5acf 111.Nm
91789042 112can help in the detection of tampered keyfiles or man in the middle
113attacks which have begun after the ssh_known_hosts file was created.

be193d89 163.Sh BUGS
164It generates "Connection closed by remote host" messages on the consoles
165of all the machines it scans if the server is older than version 2.9.
166This is because it opens a connection to the ssh port, reads the public
167key, and drops the connection as soon as it gets the key.
This page took 0.502219 seconds and 5 git commands to generate.
